Enjoy a Fun Summer – AND Avoid the “Summer Slide!”
Enjoy a Fun Summer – AND Avoid the “Summer Slide!”
It’s been a busy year. Our students have worked hard and made great gains in their learning. We are so proud of all of them! Now, summer break is upon us - a wonderful time for students to relax, have fun, and enjoy time with family and friends. At the same time, we want to keep in mind the need to avoid that “summer slide,” which is the tendency for students to lose over the summer some of the learning they gained during the school year.
Below are some ideas and resources to help keep your child actively learning over the summer:
- Columbia teachers have created grade-level specific summer calendars with fun and educational activities.
- The Columbia school library will be open for students to check-out books on Thursdays from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. from June 23rd through August 4th. Stop by, say hello, and check out some books for summer reading.
- The George Mason Regional Library is a wonderful resource for books and activities.
- The Fairfax County Public Library system is offering a fun summer reading program – check out Oceans of Possibilities.
- The math and reading programs your child might have used at school remain available over the summer – access is in the student section of the Columbia web page: ST Math, Dreambox, Imagine Learning, MyOn, Lexia
