Columbia Elementary School was buzzing with excitement as author and illustrator John Gallagher, creator of the popular Max Meow: Cat Crusader graphic novel series, created with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade! Gallagher, a former art director for Ranger Rick magazine, spent the day sharing his passion for storytelling, drawing, and creating unique characters with enthusiastic young readers.

Gallagher's presentation was a whirlwind of creativity and fun. He captivated the students with live cartooning demonstrations, showing them how simple shapes and lines could transform into the hilarious expressions of Max Meow and his friends. He also delved into the process of creating a graphic novel, from brainstorming ideas to developing storylines and bringing characters to life.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly Gallagher's insights into crafting unique and memorable characters. He emphasized the importance of giving characters distinct personalities, quirks, and motivations, using Max Meow's love for tuna and his clumsy superhero antics as a prime example. He encouraged the students to tap into their own imaginations and experiences to create characters that would resonate with readers.
