Weekly update for October 11, 2024

Dear CES friends and families,

It is hard to believe there are only 3 weeks left in the first quarter of this school year. As a reminder, this coming Monday, October 14th, is a Staff Development Day. There will be no school for students on Monday, and we will see everyone back at Columbia on Tuesday, October 15th.

Speaking of Tuesday, October 15th, that is also the same date as our October PTA meeting (see below for details). There are a lot of exciting events coming up in the next few weeks, please plan on attending either in person or virtually if you are available to get involved, support, or just hear about the wonderful activities for all Columbia students and families.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Take care,

Specials Spotlight

General Music with Mrs. Eggleton

Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders are working on getting to know the students in their class, learning the rules and procedure for the music classroom, move to music using our body to show how music changes, sing sol-mi patterns and songs to create answers to songs, echo two-measure rhythmic patterns, exploring music from other cultures and contributing in a positive manner to the group effort of making music.

3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are working on getting to know students in their class, learning rules and procedures in the music classroom, participating in action /singing games, performing on recorder/xylophones to create unique compositions, identifying band/orchestra instruments, and contribute in a positive manner to the group effort of making music.

All grades love our school song and ask to sing “We Are Columbia”  every class.  Keep a song in your heart!

  Pre-School Community Peers Opportunity

Columbia ES is pleased to announce that we will have community peers in our preschool program again this school year. The early childhood special education staff members have been investigating the possible opportunities for our students to participate in integration activities with typically developing peers. This will involve teaching preschoolers with delays and without delays in the same classroom. It can provide young children with a more stimulating environment, teach coping skills in a variety of situations, and provide the opportunity to practice appropriate social skills.

Our program will invite a limited number of community preschoolers (1-2 per class), who are aged 3 ½ -5 years, to participate in our daily preschool activities. The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students. Our students will, in turn, benefit from being with community peers who can model appropriate language, motor, and social skills.

All children learn through their play. Intellectual growth occurs in a social context, influenced strongly by the quality of social interactions. The goal of this program is to encourage active learning and promote social interaction and acceptance through shared experiences between the community children and our preschoolers with special needs.  Feel free to contact Ms. Tchinski ([email protected]) for further explanation of the program and if you are interested in participating. Your thoughts and suggestions are welcome, as we are all partners in this effort.

Fall Picnic - Canceled

Dear CES friends and families:

We have decided to cancel tonight's Fall Picnic due to the weather and the condition of the grounds. Unfortunately, we didn't have great luck with the weather for this event, however we can't wait to see everyone at Bingo-Ween on October 25th! Also, the following day we hope to see everyone at the Annandale Chamber of Commerce Parade on October 26th!

As a quick reminder, tomorrow is our first Spirit Day at school this year and we encourage everyone to wear clothing representing their favorite book or movie character. Please remember that masks and props will not be permitted. We hope to see a lot of creative ideas tomorrow!

  Early Release Mondays

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • **September 16
  • **October 21
  • November 18
  • February 10
  • March 10
  • April 21

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/giyAtCBoSU8S8FCC8 for each of your children who are enrolled at Columbia Elementary. Thank you to those of you that have already completed this form!

The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 16, 2024 and October 21, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.

**Bus transportation will run at 1:05pm for students leaving 3-hours early, and also at 4:05pm for students staying for the afternoon, for the first two Mondays. At that point, FCPS transportation services will decide if buses will continue to be run at both times for remaining early release Mondays.

As we iron out the details for planning around these days, please don't hesitate to contact Mr. Astudillo directly at [email protected].

Weekly update for August 23, 2024

Dear CES friends and families:

We had a wonderful first week of the 2024-2025 school year! Parents, we can't thank you enough for partnering with us to ensure the school year has gotten off to a smooth start. At the end of each week, we use these News You Choose emails to communicate important and timely information that impact the school community overall. You will also receive a weekly email from homeroom teachers with specific information about your child's classroom. Our teachers are also using the text messaging software, Talking Points, to communicate throughout the week. As always, you can access our school's website at http://columbiaes.fcps.edu or give us a call in the main office at 703-916-2500 between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm.

Looking forward to a great 2024-2025 school year and I hope you have a great weekend!

Take care,

Mike Astudillo

  Transportation Patience and Safety

Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your children’s buses.

If your student’s bus is delayed, you may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Please contact the Transportation Office at 703-446-2050 with any additional questions. For concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.

Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE to make sure you receive email messages about bus delays.

Summer updates from CES!

Dear friends and families of Columbia ES,

We are excited to see you at the Open House event on Thursday of next week! Please see below for timely information and dates to remember. Have a wonderful weekend.

Open House - Thursday, August 15th at 3pm

Kindergarten Playdate - Saturday, August 17th at 10am

First Day of School - Monday, August 19th - Doors open at 9:05am

Back to School Night - Thursday, September 5th

Take care,

Mike Astudillo

Proud Principal

Columbia Elementary School

We’re Eager to Welcome You Back-to School!

As summer winds down, our school and staff are looking forward to welcoming students back to our classrooms. Before the first day of school, make sure you have completed the following:

Sign Up for SIS ParentVUE

Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Parents/caregivers should receive an activation code when they register their child. Contact the school registrar [add contact info] if you need a code.

Once you have activated a SIS ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same SIS ParentVUE account. Access SIS ParentVUE using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

Need help creating an account? This video walks through the steps. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE

Update Your Contact Information

To be sure you receive important information from your schools, update your phone numbers and/or email addresses in the Parent/Guardian section of SIS ParentVUE.

Transportation information available on ParentVue

A message from transportation services is being sent out via email to notify parents/guardians of bus route information and to request transportation intent for all eligible students. Please keep an eye out for that email and transportation information is available on ParentVue now.

Update Immunizations and Records

Immunizations are required for all students to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of protecting them from certain diseases and keeping them healthy. Please log in to SIS ParentVUE to see what immunizations your child has recorded.

Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia as soon as possible. If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services.

Remember to request your child’s immunization record and bring that to the school’s front office or submit the record via SIS ParentVUE as soon as possible. Find more information on FCPS’ website

Prepare for Meals at School

Parents/caregivers need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meals benefits. School breakfast for students costs $1.75. Lunch is $3.25 for elementary students and $3.50 for middle, secondary, and high school students.

The best way to purchase meals and additional food items is to use MySchoolBucks. If you have not already, set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account today. MySchoolBucks accounts can be set up to add money to the account automatically as needed, and families with multiple children can use the same MySchoolBucks account.

Apply for Free and Reduced-Priced Meals

The application for free and reduced-priced meals is now available for the 2024-25 school year. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price lunch last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

  Free Workshops for Families

Parents and caregivers can access free webinars, confidential consultations, a lending library, and resources to help adults support the success of all students, including those with learning challenges, special needs, and disabilities. Learn more about the Family Resource Center (FRC).

In September, the FRC will host webinars for families on supporting siblings of children with disabilities, helping students organize their school work, working with children who like to push boundaries, and teen development and well-being. Sign up for the FRC newsletter for their latest offerings or visit their webinar website.
