Digital Citizenship and Internet Safety for Families

As a parent, you might be wondering what apps and games are age-appropriate for your child. How can you help your child enjoy technology and media in a safe way? FCPS recommends a four-pronged approach for supporting children. This approach will help your child become a smart, safe and balanced user of technology.  The first approach is establishing expectations by developing and enforcing media and device plans.

Establish Expectations at Home

Families are urged to develop device and media use plans. Plans will take into account each child's age, health, personality, and developmental stage. The effects of technology and media use on children also depend on the:

  • Content type and quality (age-appropriate, educational).
  • Context of use (when, where, why, how and with whom).
  • Degree to which its use supports critical thinking.
  • Degree to which it promotes creation over consumption.
  • Degree to which it is active versus passive

These factors are important to consider before setting expectations for each child. These resources will help parents set expectations:

Weekly update for March 2, 2023

Dear CES friends and families:

We have had a spirited Read-a-thon week at Columbia ES! Thank you to everyone who planned, organized, promoted and supported this fun and engaging event. Good luck to all those competing for the most minutes read, you still have time!

As a reminder, dismissal will be at 2:05pm and tomorrow is a student holiday.

Also as a reminder, student and staff safety is always a top priority for our school community. One area for growth is the school parking lot. As the weather gets warmer and we have more foot traffic on school grounds during arrival and dismissal, please remember to walk across traffic only in painted crosswalks. Additionally, please DRIVE SLOWLY when on school grounds, especially around the corner towards the SACC pickup/drop off location. Only working together can we provide the level of safety that CES students and staff deserve every day. Thank you!

I hope you enjoy the long weekend for students and we'll see everyone back on Monday, March 6th.

Take care,

The 2023 Read-a-thon is next week!

This year we are running the Read-a-Thon during Read Across America Week, February 27 – March 5. The PTA has teamed up with our wonderful librarian Chad Brizek, and our amazing Reading teacher Louise Sperling, to create fun and exciting ways for students to participate.

There will be incentives and prizes!

  • The class that reads the most total minutes will win a PIZZA PARTY sponsored by the PTA.
  • The student who reads the most minutes from each class will win a $10 GIFT CERTIFICATE to the spring book fair.
  • The top 15 students that read the most minutes will be able to choose a prize from the PTA TOY CART.

How can you help?

  • Please encourage your child/children to read independently for AT LEAST 20 MINUTES each day or more! Reading aloud to younger children will count toward our goal. Older siblings can read aloud to younger ones and both can record the minutes.
  • Contact your teacher and ask if you can come in to be a guest reader.
  • Remind your child to enter his/her minutes into the reading log AND to bring it to school on March 6th.
  • Reading log can also be submitted online using the QR code below

Thank you for your support in focusing on creating a community of readers!

-The Columbia PTA

Parental Notifications and Policy 3290: Sexually Explicit Content

A Virginia law passed in spring 2022 requires schools to create a policy for parental notification of sexually explicit content/materials. In December 2022, the School Board adopted FCPS Policy 3290: Parental Notification Regarding Instructional Materials with Sexually Explicit Content

FCPS has had policies in place for many years regarding the review of instructional materials, communication with parents, and options for alternative instructional materials.

An expectation of this new policy is the 30-day parental notification requirement of sexually explicit content in instructional materials assigned or selected by teachers. After reviewing the notification letter, parents or caregivers who prefer to choose alternative instructional materials for their child must submit this form to the appropriate teacher within the 30-day notification window. View Policy 3290 for more information.
