Assessment Information for CES

Dear CES friends and families:

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) adopted iReady assessments as an academic universal screener for all elementary school students in grades 1-6. In addition to the iReady assessment, all elementary school students in grades 1-6 complete the Developmental Spelling Analysis (DSA).

The purpose of iReady assessments is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. iReady tests are also used to measure student progress in reading and mathematics skills. The purpose of the DSA is to measure the development of spelling skills.

The iReady assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. In grades 1-3, teachers also assess students’ oral reading fluency to fulfill state testing requirements. Based on test results, some students may require additional assessments to further diagnose specific skills that may need support.

All students complete iReady and DSA in fall and spring each year. Depending on fall performance, a student may take an assessment again in the winter. iReady and DSA are delivered within the classroom instructional block. Schools set the specific dates for testing in each class. Your student’s teacher or the school test coordinator will share the specific dates scheduled for testing. You can find information about general timing of iReady and DSA testing on the grade level tests webpage https://www.fcps.edu/student-assessment/grade-level-tests

Additional information can be found at the iReady Universal Screener webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/us). If you have further questions about these assessments, please contact your student’s teacher or Sarah Boudart, Assistant Principal.

VGA and SOL testing

State assessments measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills reflected in state standards and may also be used to measure growth in learning state standards. The format and timing of state assessments vary by grade level and content area, as noted in the table below. These include:

  Schoology

What Is Schoology?

Teachers use Schoology to post their classroom materials online; to provide a secure forum for students to discuss their ideas and collaborate on projects; and to assign and collect homework electronically. It helps students stay organized, and it keeps the class connected.

A Schoology Parent Account gives you access to:

  • Your child’s classes.
  • Your child’s upcoming assignments.
  • School, class, and group announcements.

Parent accounts will be available after August 21. To access Schoology, parents will need to have an active SIS/ParentVUE account. Get more information on how to login and use Schoology.

Update Immunizations and Records

Immunizations help protect students from serious diseases and are required for public school entry. Many children missed their well check-ups and their recommended childhood vaccinations during recent years because of disruptions from COVID-19. It is critical to catch up to keep children healthy and ready for school.

While COVID-19 vaccinations are not required, many other immunizations are. Check with your student’s healthcare providers now to make sure they are up to date on their immunizations.

Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of clinics or contact your family’s healthcare provider. Appointments are required for most clinics.

Remember to request documentation of your child’s immunizations to provide to their school. Get more information on immunization requirements and the necessary documentation to share with your child’s school.

Weekly update for June 16, 2023

Dear Columbia ES friends and families:

As we wrap up the 2022-2023 school year, we would like to share our sincere appreciation with the entire CES community for a great year. The students continued to excel and grow academically, socially, and emotionally. The CES faculty and staff continued to provide a welcoming and caring atmosphere. The partnership between parents and the school is as strong as ever. We truly appreciate everyone's efforts in continuing to make this wonderful place truly a small school, with a big heart!

In addition to saying goodbye to our students, we are so proud to offer congratulations to Rekha Patel (Assistant Principal), Louise Sperling (Reading Specialist), and Judy Ann Yeh (Kitchen Manager) on their retirements! Our wonderful PTA has led the effort on providing a gift to the school in their honor that will live on for years. This commemorative bench will be installed in the next few months and we are thrilled for this wonderful addition to our beautiful school grounds.

We all hope you have a wonderful summer and keep in touch!

Take care,

Mike Astudillo

Weekly update for June 9th, 2023

Dear CES friends and families:

It certainly is hard to believe that we have only one more week to go until summer break! We are so proud of all the accomplishments and achievements our students have made this year. Thank you for your continued partnership at home!

Earlier this week we were treated to a tremendous musical performance by our Band, Strings, and Choir programs. Thank you Mr. Nakamura, Ms. Volcansek, and Mrs. Eggleton for all your hard work in preparing such a wonderful program. Our students did an outstanding job performing!

On Wednesday, we celebrated Annandale High School graduates who once walked the halls as Columbia Elementary school students. Our current Columbia Cougars were so excited to join in celebrating this accomplishment while visualizing their own future!

Next week, we will have four full days of school and then on Friday we will have a 2-hour early release. Dismissal will be at 2:05pm on the last day of school.

As a reminder, this upcoming week the Kindergarten promotion ceremony will be in the GYM on Wednesday morning at 10:30am and the 5th Grade promotion ceremony will be in the Cafeteria on Thursday at 9:30am.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Take care,
