Weekly update for May 2, 2024

Dear CES friends and families:

It truly has been a special week at Columbia Elementary School. On behalf of the faculty and staff at CES, I would like to send a most warm and sincere message of appreciation to the PTA and all the parents who celebrated Staff Appreciation Week at Columbia. The gifts were extraordinary, the food and snacks were delicious, and we definitely vibed with the Taylor Swift theme. We have truly felt the love and support from the parents of this wonderful school!

Earlier this week we enjoyed listening to the beautiful music performed by the Columbia Band and Orchestra students. They had a wonderful performance during the day for students and a second show in the evening for families and friends. Congratulations to Mr. Nakamura and Ms. Volcansek on an amazing performance and a wonderful job with our CES musicians!

As a reminder, there is no school for students tomorrow, as it is a teacher workday on Friday, May 3rd.

When students return next week, please remember that we will begin SOL testing on Tuesday morning. Although only students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will be participating, it's a total team effort from every adult and student in the building to ensure the best possible testing environment. We appreciate your support at home in reminding all students about the Columbia Cougar School-wide Expectations:

  • Kind
  • Safe
  • Hardworking
  • Respectful

We wish all of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students the best of luck for SOL testing as we know they are going to do an amazing job!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Weekly update for April 26, 2024

Dear Columbia families and friends:

It was another exciting week at CES! We celebrated an Earth Day themed spirit week, had a visit from our division's Superintendent, joined in a Chipotle Family Night out, and came together with all students and staff for a school wide morning meeting in the gym.

Additionally, as you can see above, we celebrated our annual Family Heritage Night on Thursday evening.  Thank you to all the families and staff who helped to organize, and participate in, this wonderful tradition! As part of the overall experience for families and students at Columbia ES, we provide opportunities like Family Heritage Night for students to grow as ethical and global citizens.

At Columbia Elementary School, we aim to help students become ethical and global citizens who act responsibly, recognize and appreciate the similarities and differences among people and their cultures, and care for their community and environment.

Ethical and Global Citizens:

  • Acknowledge and understand diverse perspectives and cultures
  • Help their community
  • Consider impact on the environment
  • Understand the foundations of our country and value our rights, privileges, and responsibilities
  • Act responsibly and ethically
  • Communicate effectively in multiple languages

Looking ahead to next week, we are excited to celebrate the amazing people that work at Columbia Elementary School! Staff Appreciation Week at CES will be all next week. Please see below to get involved and support the PTA as they lead the effort to show gratitude for the individuals that work so hard for children every day at CES.

Below are the testing dates for our school (all tests begin in the morning):

5th Grade

4th Grade

3rd Grade

Reading- 5/7

Math- 5/14

Science- 5/21

Reading- 5/8

Math- 5/15

Reading- 5/9

Math- 5/16

Expedited Retakes will be offered to students who earn a failing score between 375-399 on any SOL test. Retakes are optional and parental consent is required prior to retesting students. Retake consent forms were sent home at the beginning of the school year. If your child qualifies for a retake and there is no form on file, the school testing coordinator or your child’s teacher will contact you directly to inquire about a potential retake. Students who will be participating in retakes will be provided remediation instruction based on data from the first attempt during their instructional blocks and Cougar Time intervention time.

Please encourage your child to go to bed early the night before their tests. Also, as we will be testing first thing in the morning, it is important your child arrives to school on time.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our Assistant Principal and Testing Coordinator, Sarah Boudart by email at [email protected]

Essay winners in local and state competition!

Earlier this year, Columbia students in Grades 4 & 5, participated in Virginia State and National Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) essay contests, sponsored by the local Falls Church Chapter, NSDAR.

Charlie Harris and Dayana Martinez Vasquez were the Falls Church Chapter winners for the Virginia 4th Grade Flag Committee contest, “What the American Flag Means to Me”.  Their entries went to the state level where they were received by DAR state officials and judges “with joy” and admiration.

5th grade student, Aakriti Pandey, was chosen as the Falls Church winner of the American History Essay Contest, Grades 5-8.  Aakriti’s essay was also chosen as the Virginia District V winner and passed on to the state level.  State officials and judges commented that her entry was “original and creative”.  She was awarded the DAR American History Bronze Medal, certificates, and a $100 cash prize.

Weekly update for April 19, 2024

Dear CES friends and families:

We had another exciting and action-packed week at Columbia! Our 2nd graders enjoyed a trip to the National Zoo, and our Kindergartners had a blast at Frying Pan Park, as we have continued to provide students with engaging and hands-on learning experiences to help them learn about the world around them.

Also this week, we enjoyed "Purple Up Day" on Wednesday in honor of the Month of the Military Child. CES Staff, parents, and children celebrated together with time to reflect on sacrifices made, appreciation shared, and support given to the military connected families who play such in important role in the Columbia community, and across our nation.

Next week, we are very much looking forward to Family Heritage Night on Thursday, April 25th! With over 20 different home languages spoken, and over 20 different birth countries, our diversity makes us the perfect learning ground for future leaders in our society. Please see below to RSVP for Family Heritage Night as we can't wait to share in the celebration of food, clothing, and pride for the many countries and nationalities that make this such a wonderfully diverse school.

Also next week, we are celebrating Earth Day with an Earth Spirit Week! See below for the colors for students to wear each day to join in the fun.

It's another great day to be a Columbia Cougar!

Take care,

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact Ms. Robinson, our school counselor.

Important message from the CES Library

The library will be sending out overdue notices this week. Kindergarten through second grade will receive paper notices, while third through fifth grade will find their notices in their school email accounts.

As the school year wraps up, it would be a huge help if you could help your child find and return any books that are past due. If you're having trouble finding a book or have any questions, feel free to reach out to Ms. Papas at [email protected]

Solar eclipse reminders

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders. Although we are not having a school-wide viewing event during our instructional day, here are tips for you and your family should you choose to view the eclipse. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

April is Month of the Military Child and Wednesday April 17th is Purple Up Day! Please remind your students to wear purple to show support for the awesome military children in our Cougar community!

Art to Remember - Thank you!

Thank you for supporting our Art to Remember fundraiser! Orders shipped to school will be sent home with your student next week. Orders send to home should be arriving soon. If you missed the deadline, don’t worry--you can still place an order through April 26th online at:

https://arttoremember.com/school/z2phtl

Questions, reach out to our art teacher, Mrs. McKenna [email protected]

Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) School Health Services Internal Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians of FCPS students. Parents/guardians will be asked for feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week. The survey window is April 15 - April 26, 2024. Survey link: www.redcap.link/FCHDSchoolHealthSurvey.

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of School Health services. The data-driven process is in alignment with the FCPS Strategic planning process, and the survey results will contribute positively to the FCPS Strategic Plan that reflects a shared consensus among stakeholders.

Weekly update for March 22, 2024

Dear CES friends and families:

It was an exciting wrap-up to the 3rd quarter of school this week at Columbia Elementary School. As you can see above, our 3rd graders shared their cross-curricular learning through an entertaining social studies "informance" during music classes this week. Students not only exhibited communication and collaboration skills through song, they engaged in fun and exciting ways to learn about ancient Egyptian culture. Thank you to the wonderful 3rd grade teachers and our amazing music teacher, Mrs. Eggleton, for coordinating!

Also this week, our 4th graders went on a very exciting field trip to Jamestown! The American Revolution was brought to life as our fortunate 4th graders got to join in the fun. See below for more.

As a final reminder, the main office and SACC programs will be closed during spring break. We have teacher workdays scheduled for April 1st and 2nd. We will see all of our Columbia Cougars back at school on Wednesday, April 3rd.

Have a wonderful spring break!

4th Grade Field Trip to Jamestown!

Columbia Elementary School's 4th graders had a wonderful field trip to Jamestown earlier this week! Students engaged in a hands-on historical learning experience, worked on their communication and collaboration skills, and were presented with thought provoking stories and experiences from the American Revolution. Thank you to the 4th grade team of teachers, led by Ms. Fitzpatrick, on an amazing field trip and learning experience for all!

  Support Annandale HS Athletics!

A message from our friends at AHS:

Fairfax County provides the funds to pay for officials, transportation, and coaches salaries but does not provide a budget for high schools to support in purchasing equipment necessary for each program. Each school relies on ticket sales to sporting events and fundraising as their main sources of revenue.

We are asking for a $10 donation, or any other generous amount, from 10 different individuals who would like to support Annandale High School athletics. Your donation will help us purchase uniforms, update equipment, and any safety items necessary for our athletic programs. All funds raised will go directly to the athletic programs and will help us make Annandale High School the best athletic program in Fairfax County.

Update from the Book Fair and Library

Thank you for your support of the CES Spring Book Fair and your flexibility this week!  The book fair closes at the end of the day today.  If you have any students who still have purchases to make after your class has had their shopping day, please send Ms. Papas ([email protected]) an email and I’ll coordinate a time for them to come down.

There is an online Book Fair which continues to support our school, and it will remain open through March 28 if families need to make additional purchases.

The address is: https://shop.scholastic.com/parent-ecommerce/parent-store-2.html?fairId=5414941

Any money remaining in eWallet accounts after the Book Fair will be converted to an electronic gift card that can be used at any Scholastic Book Fair.

Your feedback matters!

Today, Monday, March 18th, Columbia Elementary School parents, guardians, staff and additional stakeholders will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form.

This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents and guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how I demonstrate/impact instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within Columbia Elementary School.

The questionnaire will be administered between March 18th and April 5th. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your feedback matters!

Thank you in advance for taking the time to provide me thoughtful feedback on how I can best serve all contributing members of our school community.

Weekly update for March 8, 2024

Dear CES friends and families:

It has been another great week at Columbia! As you can see above, our 1st graders had a wonderful learning experience earlier this week at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. They practiced and enriched their ethical and global citizen skills through authentic learning experiences in mathematics, measurement, and social studies. They also had the opportunity to enhance their understanding of the impact of architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, construction, planning, and design.

Thank you to the PTA and our wonderful librarian, Ms. Papas, for their efforts around supporting a successful read-a-thon this week! We are planning details around and looking forward to the CES spring book fair, scheduled for March 18 - 22nd.

Our School Innovation and Improvement Plan goal, in terms of reading, revolves around having all students on grade level by 3rd grade. The entire CES community is committed to helping students reach this goal not only in the classroom, but also with important community events like the Read-a-thon and the Book Fair. We appreciate your family's support for these events and activities!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  Elementary Institute for the Arts

Students in all FCPS schools can enroll in the Elementary Institute for the Arts. IFTA is a weekly Arts enrichment program for students in rising 3rd through 6th grades during the month of July. Students take classes in Art, Music, Theatre, and Dance every day. Transportation is provided from around the county. Tuition assistance is available for students who qualify.

Check out the Elementary Institute for the Arts website for more information or email [email protected].

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs.

Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502.

Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

  Family Engagement Parent Survey

Check your inboxes because FCPS has begun administering the Family Engagement Survey! The window will be open until Friday, March 22. The survey is designed to gather data to further inform implementation of the 2023-30 Strategic Plan. One such component of the Strategic Plan that will benefit is Pillar B: Vibrant Home, School, & Community Partnerships and to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our school community. The survey provides a key opportunity to hear the family perspectives and voices, and receive their feedback on their family’s engagement experience within FCPS.  Parents/caregivers should have received an email invitation with a unique survey link from K12 Insight on March 3. The subject line was: FCPS Family Engagement Survey.

A general survey link that families can use is available on FCPS’ website. Finally, paper copies are also available in the main office at Columbia.

Weekly update for March 1, 2024

Dear CES friends and families:

As you can see above, earlier this week our Kindergarten students went on their first of two field trips this year. They had a wonderful time at the Hidden Oaks Nature Center where naturalists connected our Columbia Cougars with the nature center's natural and cultural resources, including live animals. Additionally, naturalists encouraged students to become environmental stewards of their community and helped us in achieving the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate goal to develop global citizens.

Next week we are hosting the 2024 Columbia Read-a-thon! Students will receive a form to track their reading minutes next week and prizes will be given for the upcoming spring book fair! Additionally, there will be a "Masked Reader" guessing game during the morning news and the library will be open on Monday and Thursday after school as we welcome parents and families to join in the fun.

In other news, we are happy to announce that after-school clubs are returning after spring break! Keep an eye out for registration information for spring club offerings at CES, including a couple of new clubs sponsored by the wonderful PTA. Stay tuned for more information soon!

This is a gentle reminder that we will not have school on Tuesday of next week, March 5th.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello, Columbia families and friends!

Our school is participating in a creative fundraiser with Art to Remember that allows you to purchase keepsake products customized with your child’s art. There are over 50 products and many are less than $15. These make great gifts, and a percentage of every purchase goes right back to our school. Click on the link below and enter the online order code shown on your child’s order form or search for your child’s artwork by name. Then, have fun shopping!

https://arttoremember.com/school/Z2PHTL

Paper order forms with online order codes will be sent home with your child next week, but you can go ahead and view their artwork and place orders at the link above. All orders are due by Friday, March 15th. Also feel free to share your child’s code with extended family and friends. If you have any questions, please reach out to our Art teacher, Michelle McKenna [email protected].

https://arttoremember.com/school/Z2PHTL
