The PTA would like to thank everyone for their support this year. We hope you have a wonderful holiday and we look forward to seeing you after the break.

Fall Direct Donation Campaign

We are a third of the way to our goal! With increasing reliance on technology in schools for learning, it's more important than ever for our elementary students to learn fundamental typing skills to increase their digital literacy. The wonderful CES staff have requested support for a typing curriculum designed to increase typing proficiency for students in grades 3-5. We are hoping to raise $2,300 to purchase the Edclub typing program for three years that will allow Columbia teachers the ability to provide broad access to the program for their students. The campaign is now live and will run through January 15th. Please consider a contribution, any amount helps. Thank you!

Donations can be submitted several ways:

It has been another great week at Columbia. I wanted to take a moment and share my sincere appreciation to the staff, students, and families that came together this week for our annual "Donuts with Grown-ups" event. Full Time Advanced Academics Referral Deadline Reminder:

Parents/guardians of Columbia Elementary students in Grades 2-5 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Michelle Sansone [email protected] no later than December 15, 2024

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing [email protected]

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.

Specials Spotlight Music with Mrs. Eggleton

Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders are practicing steady beats with body percussion and instruments. Singing seasonal songs and performing rhymes and poems with non-pitched percussion instruments. We love the triangles, hand drums, and maracas. Our composer for this quarter is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. We love keeping the steady beat to the “March” from the ballet “The Nutcracker” composed by Tchaikovsky.

3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are listening to and describing music using music terms and learning to identify traditional music symbols and terms.  Our composer of the quarter is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. We are working in small groups using movement words to perform with the “March” from The Nutcracker. Students will use scarves, ribbons and plastic candy canes to showcase their composition.

4th grade had the opportunity to go to the Kennedy Center to hear the National Symphony Orchestra.  They enjoyed seeing and hearing a performance in person.

Memories will be made as we celebrate with our school-wide winter sing along.

Weekly update for December 6, 2024

Dear CES friends and families:

We have had another great week at Columbia! On Monday, the wonderful PTA provided a Holiday Sweet Shoppe for CES faculty and staff. We were so appreciative and grateful to have a warm welcome back to school after the Thanksgiving break. Thank you to the PTA for taking such great care of the adults at CES. #SmallSchoolBigHeart

On Wednesday of this week, our 5th graders went on a field trip to visit the U.S. Capitol. Many of us, myself included, often take for granted how close we are to historically important landmarks that are only a short drive away. Students learned about the legislative branch of government and tied their hands-on tour and experience with social studies standards in the classroom.

Finally, earlier today our 1st graders had a terrific time vising the Lego Discovery Center in Springfield as they learned through hands-on experiments about force and motion in science.

Next week, our monthly PTA meeting has been canceled. We will meet again in January. Looking forward to seeing you and your family at our annual Donuts with Grown-ups event on Thursday/Friday of next week. See below for more details.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  Handwashing Reminder!

As we transition into the fall and winter seasons, it's important to remind our students, staff, and families about the importance of practicing good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. These simple practices can significantly reduce the spread of germs, particularly during the upcoming holiday season when gatherings and travel increase.

Key Reminders:

  • Wash Hands Frequently: Encourage students to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the restroom, and after blowing their nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Use Hand Sanitizer: When soap and water are not readily available, provide access to alcohol-based hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol content.
  • Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Remind students to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or their elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues properly in a wastebasket and wash their hands.
  • Avoid Touching Face: Discourage students from touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact us.

Register for ParentVUELearn how to activate your ParentVUE account, so you can easily access your child’s results and other helpful information.

  • City of Fairfax Regional Library – lessons only.  Media is not available.

You are invited to attend an evening opportunity to preview the Family Life Education media and lessons and to talk with school staff about the program.  The meeting will be held on November 19 at 6:30 pm on Zoom. All program materials and media for all grade levels will be available for your review at this time.

Parents/guardians who do not wish to have their child participate in FLE instruction may choose to opt their child out of any or all of the lessons. If you would like to opt your child out of one or more lessons, opt-out forms for students in general education classes are available in the Parent Digital Consent (PDC). A paper opt-out form is being used for students in special education and using the modified FLE lessons for the 2024-25 school year. Modified opt-out forms can be found at, https://www.fcps.edu/academics/curriculum/subject-area/family-life-education-fle/fle-opt-out-request-forms  Should you opt your child out and then later decide you want your child included in FLE instruction, you must notify your child’s school principal or assistant principal in writing before instruction begins.

An alternative non-FLE health instructional program is provided for students who do not take part in FLE instruction, and every effort is made to foster understanding and respect for family choices and to avoid peer pressure for or against participation in the program.

Instruction occurs at various times during the school year.  Please contact your child’s teacher for specific dates of FLE instruction. We look forward to working as your partner in providing information that will help your child make healthy choices related to the exciting changes and new challenges, he/she will be facing in the next few years.

  Professional Development for Teachers

Annandale Community:

We are excited to share the success of our recent math professional development sessions, held across the Annandale Pyramid of teachers. This collaboration is part of our ongoing commitment to aligning and enhancing math instruction from kindergarten through 12th grade, ensuring every student benefits from innovative, inclusive approaches to learning.

The sessions were made even more memorable by a visit from Superintendent Reid, who observed one of the workshops at Annandale Terrace Elementary School. She highlighted the visit in her "Weekly Reflections" newsletter, sharing her appreciation for our teachers’ dedication: "It was inspiring to see second grade teachers from across the pyramid collaborating on the upcoming math unit, sharing strategies, and adapting resources specifically to support our multilingual learners." Her words energize us to continue this vital work in supporting our diverse learners.

Here’s a look at the event highlights and outcomes:

Annandale Pyramid Elementary Schools: The recent Annandale Pyramid Elementary Math Professional Development session, held across various schools, brought together K-5 teachers for focused workshops tailored to each grade level. The sessions began with an overview of goals and shared resources, emphasizing adaptations for multilingual learners. Teachers then practiced effective scaffolding techniques in small groups and rehearsed lesson plans, with peer feedback to refine their approaches. These collaborative efforts aimed to enhance support for multilingual students and foster consistent instructional strategies across schools.

Annandale Pyramid Secondary Schools (Grades 6-12): Teachers from Annandale High School, Poe Middle School, and Holmes Middle School worked closely to share best practices to support our diverse group of students. They explored ways to address students’ needs through teacher-led small groups and used pictorial anchor charts to strengthen students' mathematical language. Content teams identified specific upcoming lessons where they plan to apply these strategies. This collaborative work highlights our commitment to building community across our schools and supporting our unified vision:

In the Annandale Pyramid, mathematics teaching and learning focuses on developing an understanding of concepts and procedures through problem-solving, reasoning, and discourse.

Thank you for your continued support as we foster a collaborative learning community in the Annandale Pyramid. Together, we are making strides toward a brighter future for all our students.

The Annandale Pyramid Principals:

Ingrid Badia (Annandale Terrace ES), Keesha Jackson-Muir (Braddock ES), Elizabeth Williams (Bren Mar Park ES), Michael Astudillo (Columbia ES), Felicia Usher (Weyanoke ES), Chad McRae (North Springfield ES), Serena Giron (Holmes MS), Jason Pannutti (Poe MS), and Shawn DeRose (Annandale HS)

Weekly update for November 8, 2024

Dear Columbia friends and families,

We have had a strong start to the 2nd quarter of school. Earlier today, we celebrated the upcoming Veteran's Day holiday in a number of ways, including having guest speakers read books to our students about the important role that the military plays in our lives. Thank you to all the Veterans and active duty members who shared time with our Cougars today!

As you can see in pictures and articles below, many students have already attended their first field trip of the school year. As one of our School Improvement and Innovation Plan goals revolves around developing critical thinking skills, field trips can encourage students to think about a topic from multiple perspectives. Studies show that students who go on a variety of field trips have higher test scores and improved critical thinking skills overall. We are excited to offer these experiential learning opportunities throughout the year as we align them with curriculum standards. Thank you for your support for these impactful life-long learning experiences!

As a reminder, in honor of Veteran's Day, Monday will be a holiday with no school. We will see our Cougars back here on Tuesday, November 12th.

Have a wonderful three-day weekend!

Take care,

Mike Astudillo

2nd Grade Field Trip to E.C. Lawrence Park

On Thursday of this week, 2nd Graders visited E.C. Lawrence Park Earlier this month, second grade visited Ellanor C. Lawrence Park to learn about Native American Life in Fairfax County. Students explored what life may have been like for Eastern Woodland Indians and the relationship they had with the land that is now Fairfax County. Take a look at the CES website for more pictures and details!

Weekly update for October 31, 2024

Dear CES friends and families,

It is hard to believe that today is the last day of the 1st quarter. Our Cougars have worked very hard since our school year began in August to learn the procedures, routines, and expectations of their homeroom class, their specials class as well as how to navigate the entire school community. They have also completed many beginning of the year assessments to guide the work we do during our school-wide reading and math intervention blocks to ensure that we are supporting all Cougars by name and by need. Looking forward to a wonderful 2nd quarter of school!

We would like to thank the PTA for hosting another successful Bingo-ween event last Friday evening for the CES community. Led by our PTA president, Sylvie Nguyen-Fawley, the event was well attended, spirited, and a ton of fun! I would also like to send along a special thank you to all the CES teachers, families, and friends who joined the Annandale Chamber of Commerce parade. This truly is a small school, with a big heart!

As a reminder, we have a 2-hour early release this afternoon with dismissal at 2:05pm. Also, there is no school tomorrow, Monday or Tuesday due to holidays and teacher workdays. We will see all of our Cougars back at school on Wednesday, November 6th

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Take care,

FLES & STEAM with Srta. Alba

Hola familias de CES! It has been a great start in FLES/STEAM this quarter. Kindergarten has been working on colors, numbers 1-10, and the alphabet. First graders and second graders are getting ready to do syllables, so that they’ll be able to read in Spanish! In third grade, students have learned about insects and what they see in a garden. In fourth grade, students have learned about nature and bodies of water in Spanish. Lastly, fifth grade students are working on places in the community and created a building that they would want to see in their community. Many designed their own version of a skyscraper using KEVA planks!

PTA Cougar Cafe success!

Earlier this week, staff at Columbia were treated to a delicious spread of treats and coffee by the wonderful PTA. Teachers were grateful, elated and well caffeinated as a result! Art with Mrs. McKenna

Hello CES Families! It has been an amazing 1st quarter in Art class. Kindergarten students have been introduced to multiple media- drawing, collage, sculpture, and ceramic clay. First graders have been creating art about their families and deciduous trees. Second graders have been creating seasonal artworks--paintings and weavings. Ask your 1st or 2nd grader which season they chose to represent in their artwork? Third graders have been working hard on their cultural self-portraits and learning the proportions of the face. In Fourth grade, we have been learning the proportion of the human figure through gesture drawings and wire sculptures and are starting our ceramic coil pots. Fifth graders have been using their imaginations to create a painting of a landscape of their own video game world design. I am so proud of your young artists and the bravery they show to share about themselves and their world through their artmaking!

Second quarter will be beginning our artworks for our Art to Remember fundraiser this Spring and each grade level will be experiencing more 2-D and 3-D art media. Thank you as always, for your continued support of our Art program and a special thank you to those of you who have been sending in yogurt cups for our paint stations and bubble wrap envelopes. Donations are always appreciated!

Early this week we were pleased to host John Gallagher, the author of the Max Meow graphic novel series. Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades came together to learn and hear from this popular author in our library. Topics included a historical overview of comics and graphic novels, along with integrating hieroglyphics and the origin of storytelling through the ages. Different types of characters and styles were covered using simple shapes to create characters, both funny and heroic. Students got to learn how to draw characters themselves and really enjoyed this interactive event!

Weekly update for October 11, 2024

Dear CES friends and families,

Speaking of Tuesday, October 15th, that is also the same date as our October PTA meeting (see below for details). There are a lot of exciting events coming up in the next few weeks, please plan on attending either in person or virtually if you are available to get involved, support, or just hear about the wonderful activities for all Columbia students and families.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Specials Spotlight

General Music with Mrs. Eggleton

Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders are working on getting to know the students in their class, learning the rules and procedure for the music classroom, move to music using our body to show how music changes, sing sol-mi patterns and songs to create answers to songs, echo two-measure rhythmic patterns, exploring music from other cultures and contributing in a positive manner to the group effort of making music.

3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are working on getting to know students in their class, learning rules and procedures in the music classroom, participating in action /singing games, performing on recorder/xylophones to create unique compositions, identifying band/orchestra instruments, and contribute in a positive manner to the group effort of making music.

All grades love our school song and ask to sing “We Are Columbia”  every class.  Keep a song in your heart!

  Pre-School Community Peers Opportunity

Columbia ES is pleased to announce that we will have community peers in our preschool program again this school year. The early childhood special education staff members have been investigating the possible opportunities for our students to participate in integration activities with typically developing peers. This will involve teaching preschoolers with delays and without delays in the same classroom. It can provide young children with a more stimulating environment, teach coping skills in a variety of situations, and provide the opportunity to practice appropriate social skills.

Our program will invite a limited number of community preschoolers (1-2 per class), who are aged 3 ½ -5 years, to participate in our daily preschool activities. The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students. Our students will, in turn, benefit from being with community peers who can model appropriate language, motor, and social skills.

All children learn through their play. Intellectual growth occurs in a social context, influenced strongly by the quality of social interactions. The goal of this program is to encourage active learning and promote social interaction and acceptance through shared experiences between the community children and our preschoolers with special needs.  Feel free to contact Ms. Tchinski ([email protected]) for further explanation of the program and if you are interested in participating. Your thoughts and suggestions are welcome, as we are all partners in this effort.
